2023 – Kassandra Production // HISTORY OF SEXUALITY (Performance Installation)

THE SHOW : HISTORY OF SEXUALITY

Messy, juicy, naughty! HISTORY OF SEXUALITY is an interactive DIY performance about sex. In this queer and quirky performance, troublemakers and performance artists Andreas Constantinou and Annika B. Lewis shamelessly address the taboos and desires, the power and social grip that sex has over us all. Wearing anything from, well… nothing to rabbit-, bear- and cuddly sex monster costumes, they take you on a wild ride through their own histories of sexuality; a living archive in a simple do-it-yourself style, that encourages you to take back the power over your body and sexuality. Because sex sells. Sex rules. It’s our modern-day battlefield! Let’s regain territory! Let’s talk about sex!

The performance open up for a dialogue about sex in a funny and informal way, sharing what sex can be in a time where most young people only get their information about sex through porn.

Duration: 55 min

THE CONTEXT

”EVERYTHING IS ABOUT SEX, BUT SEX IS ABOUT POWER” – OSCAR WILDE

“HISTORY OF SEXUALITY is a personal commentary on contemporary taboos and dominant narratives when it comes to body and sex.

We live in a culture where marketing agencies sell products using increasingly extreme sexual images and where music videos and reality TV push young people to take on hypersexual roles to become popular on social media. While some embrace and push this agenda, others swear by the opposite; A new morality, where sex is perceived as evil, is also emerging. The two extremes form a battleground for cultural policy discourse worldwide. When it comes to sex, the world is divided.

We question our handling of today’s mediated culture and the hidden power structures at play.We want to focus on the concept of pleasure at a time when violent pornography has become a hard-hitting commodity. We want to create a safe space for dialogue about sex, by letting performance art curb the subject in an entertaining and disarming way.

HISTORY OF SEXUALITY hits right through this whole debate with both edge, wildness and redemptive humour. With this very personal and all-revealing performance, we ask the question; how do we regain control over our own body, body image and sexuality?”
