Description
Together with choreographer Tim Matiakis and composer Niels Rønsholdt Scenatet has created a universe that in a symbiosis of movement andmusic gives us an insight into a secret community, its rituals, and memories. The world-renowned house dancer Marie Kaae Schmidt takes the stage together with five performers and musicians from the ensemble of Scenatet. Memoriam reminds us of the value of the communities, we are part of, and makes us reflect on the rituals and traditions that enable communities to pass on experiences over time. In a universe of reminiscences of stories told and stories waiting to be told in an uncertain present, we are confronted with a disturbing past that resonates and forces us to look into a bleak future.
Memoriam addresses an inquisitive audience with an interest in music and dance and a deep pre-occupation with the spiritual questions posed by our contemporary harbingers of the future.

WHY THIS WORK WAS SELECTED
It is extraordinary how well balanced this collaboration is – between highly unusual suspects – such as one of Denmark’s best house dancers, a music ensemble playing contemporary music, while all creatures are dressed into a futuristic universe. Ironically, this work tells the story about how all human relations contains paradoxical loneliness in a way that makes all the futuristic creatures on stage seem almost magically interconnected.
THE CONTEXT
Memoriam is a work that approaches memory from different angles –cultural memory, bodily memory, personal memory. Through movement andvoice, through memorizations, descriptions and variations, a group of people seeks a path to something, which might be of importance. By merging contemporary dance and house dance, classical music and speech, baroque and futuristic clothes, Memoriam unfolds a language of remembrance and reminiscence.
THE COMPANY: SCENATET
Scenatet, founded in 2008 by artistic director Anna Berit Asp Christensen, is recognized as one of the most innovative and experimental new music / interdisciplinary ensembles in Europe. With roots in score music and with a strong relationship to the performing arts and dramaturgy, they often operate within the field, where staging and reality meet and merge into innovative formats and spaces. Crossing fields of drama, installation and the yet undefined, Scenatet fuses music and art into dramaturgical narratives and extraordinary experiences that make the audience part of something truly new.

INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY
Memoriam is a work of art that addresses many types of international collaborators with its combination of catchy classical music, an abstract and universally sensual expression and a choreography that mixes house and modern dance. Memoriam recalls memories and glimpses of remembrance that we have not yet experienced, creating a weightless state that speaks to a large audience segment within many genres.

FORMAT AND SUSTAINABILITY
The work has been produced with the ambition of a simple setup that does not require an inappropriate amount of resources in terms of e.g. electricity and transport. The work is acoustic and all lights are battery powered. All costumes etc. are created from recycling and upcycling.
