Never the Same Selves
Are you your memory?
"Never the Same Selves" turns memory into a live, shifting terrain. Built around a single personal memory, the work unfolds as a choreographic and sonic excavation where remembering is manipulated, filtered, and repeated—never fixed, always reconstructed.
Informed by dialogue with memory scientists, the performance approaches memory as something never stable and never singular, but continuously formed in the present rather than stored as fixed truth. Movement and sound are generated together, allowing identity to appear as something continually shaped rather than given. The work asks: If memory only exists here and now, can we soften the stories we tell about ourselves—and meet our own and others’ lived experiences with greater compassion?
Created by choreographer/dancer Tim Matiakis and composer/musician Katrine Grarup Elbo, "Never the Same Selves" invites audiences into an intimate, episodic world where memory becomes a shared, embodied inquiry.
About the Company: KINISI
Tim Matiakis is a Danish-based Swedish–Greek choreographer and artistic director of KINISI. With a background in classical ballet and a specialization in new creations, he has developed a choreographic practice that places the body at the center of knowledge production. From 2012–2021, he was artistic director of Corpus, the internationally acclaimed and groundbreaking contemporary ensemble of The Royal Danish Theatre, where he curated and co-created innovative works with leading international artists. His work has been recognized with major awards, including the Danish Arts Foundation’s Working Grant (2022, 2023, 2025) and the Reumert Award for Dance Performance of the Year. His works tour internationally across stage and interdisciplinary contexts.
