MARIE DAHL Company
"SILK. SUGAR. SAND" is a staged vocal-music performance in three acts about the history behind three of the most influential natural materials and resources in our history. Materials that have shaped, and still shape, our political, economic, and ecological landscapes. In music, visual elements, text, and sound, similarities and differences are revealed in historical contexts, where the human desire for the beautiful, the sweet, and the great runs like a common thread through world history.
Three classical singers sit elevated in large floor-length, sculptural costumes representing silk, sugar, and sand. Between each act, a layer is dropped, revealing a new material. Two singers are on the floor, moving around. All have detailed, but simplistic, choreographies and movements in a minimal setting, where light is a moving factor.
The three vocal movements are newly written compositions by three international composers, which are assembled and accompanied by electronic music and sound.

MARIE DAHL Company creates stage and site-specific cross-disciplinary works, with a focus on synergy in the interaction between the individual disciplines and elements. Marie Dahl’s works are visual and auditory compositions with rigorous dramaturgical structures. They are often rooted in investigative and extended work with text and literature. Her work is characterized by attention to detail, precision, quality, and presence in movements, music, and images. The works pair the stylistic with the sensual and create space for the poetic treatment of basic human conditions.
